Welcome to the Savage family, Jim.
The dealership you mentined really is a poor example of customer service as it should be.
But the bike itself is great!, I'd do as much as possible myself and change the dealer for all
things you can't do.
About the valve clearance if you do it yourself: you have to be pretty exact, if everything is o.k.
I guess you don't have to check it too often. According to someone else waaay down this forum he
only checks it when you start hearing that it has to be checked. Meaning a clicking noise coming up.
Other than that you should check the following:
- oil level. Always keep it up to proper level
- oil and filter change. The more often the better.
- check the belt for possible wear if the wheel was crooked like you said
- air filter, braking fluid, battery and proper air pressure on tires
and if you can I'd change the front braking line to a steelflex-plated on. I did so, made a whole lot
of a diffrenece.
Enjoy your bike and ride safe,
Alfred
